Redacted means removed

A small desktop app for redacting PDF files on your own machine. Draw boxes over what must go, redact, and save a copy.

In the saved copy the covered text and images are removed from the file, not hidden behind black rectangles, so they cannot be copied or recovered.

Source code

What it does

View

Open a PDF, move between pages, zoom in and out or fit to the window.

Mark

Click and drag over each area; selections show in red before you redact.

Redact all

Removes the content under every box from its page (PyMuPDF apply_redactions).

Undo and redo

While you work.

Save as

Writes a new file and leaves the original untouched.

Run it

uv installs Python 3.12 and the dependencies (PyMuPDF, Pillow); Tkinter ships with Python. Open a PDF, drag over each area, click Redact all, then Save as.

uv sync
uv run pdf-redactor # then Select PDF
uv run pdf-redactor path/to/document.pdf

Before you share

The saved file is rewritten whole with unused objects dropped, so earlier revisions do not survive. The document's metadata (title, author, subject) and any embedded attachments are not edited: check them before sharing. Keep the original if you may need it; redaction in the copy is permanent.

Privacy

Nothing leaves your machine: the app makes no network requests and stores nothing of its own. It reads the PDF you open and writes only the file you choose in Save as.

This page stores only your light or dark choice, whether you hid the intro, and your answer to the notice, all on this device.
